A Safer Home and a Better Recovery for Shantel Jenkins

DTRF Aging with Dignity

In Addis, Louisiana, Shantel Jenkins underwent surgery in December. When she came home, she had an updated bathroom.

Through DTRF's Aging with Dignity program, the Foundation installed grab bars and an elevated toilet seat in Shantel's home ahead of her procedure. Instead of navigating risk and discomfort during one of the most vulnerable stretches of her life, Shantel could heal safely and comfortably at home.

"After my surgery in December, having repairs in my bathroom completed made a huge difference in my recovery."

That is what Aging with Dignity is designed to do. The program protects the dignity of Descendant elders, prevents injury, and provides peace of mind in moments when peace of mind is hardest to come by. For Descendants aged 55 and older, simple modifications — grab bars, ramps, widened doorways, bathroom supports — can be the difference between aging safely at home and not being able to stay at all.

In partnership with Rosarium Health, DTRF coordinates in-home assessments and professional installations so Descendants can remain rooted in the homes and communities they've spent a lifetime building.
