Community Healing at the 2025 State Of Black Los Angeles Conference
This month, the Descendants Truth & Reconciliation Foundation was honored to join the Los Angeles Urban League at its 2025 State of Black Los Angeles Conference. At this year’s convening, themed “Solidarity in Action: Black and Brown LA,” the Foundation awarded $40,000 in grants to the Los Angeles Urban League. The funding includes $20,000 allocated for Altadena wildfire relief and $20,000 to support community healing initiatives.
Earlier this year, the fifth deadliest and second most destructive wildfires in California history devastated the Altadena community. Families were displaced, homes were destroyed, and the community was left with lasting physical and emotional damage. The Foundation’s wildfire relief grant aims to address immediate needs and recovery efforts as residents, some of whom are Descendants, continue the difficult work of rebuilding their lives.
The second grant responds to our belief that recovery goes beyond physical rebuilding. This grant will fund community healing initiatives designed to rebuild the social and emotional infrastructure that helps communities process trauma, reconnect, and heal. The programming will create space for reflection and collective strength, addressing the more profound inequities that can leave some communities vulnerable in times of crisis.
The Foundation was created on the basis of truth and healing to address the legacy of Jesuit slaveholding and expand that work toward broader community repair. Partnering with organizations like the Los Angeles Urban League allows us to support locally led efforts, where the community understands its own needs best.
